In September 2022, Hyundai Heavy Industries Group successfully completed the Performance Test of the 1.5MW class natural gas-hydrogen mixed fuel engine and acquired the AIP (Approval in Principle) for the ‘HiMSEN natural gas-hydrogen mixed fuel engine safety concept’.
The HiMSEN natural gas-hydrogen mixed fuel engine, a newly developed engine based on the HiMSEN natural gas-diesel dual fuel engine, is a new concept environment-friendly engine which uses hydrogen, a zero carbon fuel.
By increasing the proportion of hydrogen upto 25%, which is considered highest in the world, CO2 is reduced more than 30% (varies per load) compared to diesel engines. By improving the compression ratio within the combustion chamber and through lean-burn technology, combustion is stabilized and various types of greenhouse gases such as CO2 and methane are reduced within the emission.
As hydrogen is lighter and combustion speed is 6~9 times faster than natural gas, higher level of engine control technology and safety design is required in order to secure stable combustion performance. With the successful Performance Test, HHI Group will continue to develop the hydrogen engine and lead the environment-friendly hydrogen engine market for stationary and marine applications.
